The Ushiromiya family gathers to decide who will take over as head of the family and, more importantly, who will inherit an immense fortune when the current leader, Kinzo Ushiromiya, passes away. Eight family members arrive by boat to join three other family members already on the island, as well as 5 servants, for a total of eighteen people. Everyone finds themselves stranded on Rokkenjima Island due to a severe sea storm. However, it turns out that Kinzo practices several kinds of rituals related to occultism. His dying wish is to see Beatrice, "the Golden Witch," one last time. Battler Ushiromiya, 18 years old, then discovers the conditions for summoning Beatrice on a stele erected in front of her portrait. As these conditions prove to be grim for the island's inhabitants, a series of locked-room murders then strikes the entire Ushiromiya family...
